DUI Educational Programs in Towson

DUI Educational Programs Towson

When looking back at the past decade, Maryland peaked with its highest number of DUI charges in 2019. In total, the state saw 385.6 arrests for every 100,000 people. Unfortunately, drunk driving is still a real concern for the country that needs to be addressed. Luckily, there are DUI educational programs in Towson that can help.

What is a DUI?

Each state defines its DUI charges differently. In Maryland, a DUI (Driving Under the Influence) is a criminal charge when a driver is found to have operated a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) level of 0.08 percent or higher. The punishment for this charge can include jail times, fines, a revoked license, and mandatory participation in DUI educational programs.

What are DUI Educational Programs?

There are generally two types of DUI educational programs available. A “Level One” educational program is a six-week program for two-hours per week. This level of program is most suitable for first-time offenders, individuals under 21, or offenders with a BAC under 0.10 percent. A “Level Two” educational program combines the same education as the Level One course with individual therapy. This program level is ideal for repeat offenders, individuals with serious alcohol addiction, or offenders who had a BAC of higher than 0.10 percent.

How DUI Educational Programs Can Help

DUI Educational Programs, also known as “Drunk Driving Education,” “DUI School,” or “AEP” (alcohol education program), teaches participants about the dangers of alcohol dependency, the risks of drunk driving, and the consequences of DUI charges.

Many people who incur a DUI charge may be struggling with alcohol addiction and not even realize it. These programs highlight the dangers of drunk driving to the driver, their passenger, and other people on the road. Additionally, participants learn how to plan ahead, so they don’t end up repeating their mistakes and getting another DUI charge in the future. They learn how to arrange a friend to be the sober driver, plan a route home via public transit, or have someone pick them up at the end of the night.

Not everyone has the opportunity to enroll in DUI educational programs as mandated by the court. The court requires these courses as a way to reduce harsher penalties, such as reduced fines or jail time. An individual is told to participate in the program before their sentencing. Failure to complete the program can result in a harsher sentence.

The DMV can also require an individual to participate in DUI educational programs to avoid license suspension.

Some participants choose to enroll in DUI educational programs even if it wasn’t mandated in court, as they recognize the benefit of these programs.
