DUI Educational Programs in Baltimore City May be Mandatory

DUI/DWI Programs

It takes a split second to decide to drive when under the influence, but the consequences of this decision can be enormous. When someone chooses to drive drunk, they can endanger the lives of their passengers, the other people on the road, and themselves. In 2016, Maryland saw 2.59 out of every 100,000 people die due to a drunk driving incident. And, if an accident doesn’t occur, the driver is putting themselves at risk of getting a DUI or DWI. If charged, many offenders are required to attend DUI educational programs in Baltimore City.

DUI versus DWI Charges

DUI stands for “driving under the influence,” while DWI stands for “driving while intoxicated” or “driving while impaired.” Each state carries different charges and definitions for both terms. In Maryland, a DWI is a lesser charge and is applied when a driver’s BAC (blood alcohol concentration) is between 0.07 and 0.08 percent. A DWI charge is for drivers found to be operating a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08 percent or higher. As it’s a higher BAC, the DWI comes with more intense consequences in Maryland.

A judge can issue that an individual charged with a DWI or a DUI has to attend mandatory DUI educational programs, sometimes known as “drunk driving education.” Often, judges opt for this over harsher punishments, such as fines, jail time, or license suspension.

Maryland can order offenders to attend mandatory alcohol education, assessment, and treatment before they get their license privileges back. The offender needs to attend a state-approved DUI educational program and provide proof of completion to the judge. Most of these courses have a 12-hour minimum commitment in Maryland. Some students will benefit from attending the classes for more than the 12-hour commitment.

How Mandatory Courses Help

A DUI educational program touches on many learning lessons, including:

  • How to make responsible choices and avoid driving under the influence again
  • The consequences of driving under the influence
  • The impact drugs and alcohol can have on the body
  • Can help people with a severe substance abuse problem take their first step into treatment
