DUI/DWI programs are available for individuals who are repeat offenders of driving under the influence of different substances, such as alcohol, or driving while impaired. Here is more information regarding DUI and DWI programs.
What is a DUI/DWI?
Driving under the influence (DWI) means an individual has exceeded the legal limit of 0.08% of alcohol content to safely operate a motor vehicle. Operating a vehicle under these circumstances is illegal and can result in a suspended license.
Driving while impaired or intoxicated (DWI) means an individual has consumed alcohol, but not exceed the state’s legal limit for operating a vehicle. The individual’s senses were not diminished, but they are intoxicated.
Is a DUI More Serious Than a DWI?
In some states, a DUI and a DWI are considered the same thing. The only difference between to the two is one charge may be considered more serious from a legal aspect, depending on the state. Both offenses are serious because they put people at risk, sometimes with fatal results.
How Can Getting a DUI or a DWI Impact Your License?
The impact a DUI or DWI has on an individual’s license depends on if it’s their first offense, and the severity of the situation, such as accidents and injuries to other people and property.
If this is an individual’s first offense, their license can be suspended for 90 days to one year. For second-time offenders, their license can be revoked for one year. Third-time offenders may have their license suspended for three years and have a license suspension reinstatement fee of $680. Fourth-time offenders can have their license suspended for three to six years with a $680 license suspension reinstatement fee. Individuals who continue to repeat this same offense can lose their license permanently.
Drivers who have a DUI or DWI offense will have higher insurance premiums than drivers who do not have these offenses on record. Insurance premiums can increase by as much as 65 percent. A DUI conviction will increase a driver’s insurance for a maximum of three years.
