Beginning Recovery: Steps to Take After a DUI

Steps to Take After a DUI

If you’re like most people who get charged with driving under the influence, the first thing you’ll wonder is what steps to take after a DUI. Being arrested and sentenced for intoxicated driving is scary and daunting. Luckily, the required steps following a DUI aren’t numerous, but they do required consistency and follow through.

DUI or DWI?

Despite often being used interchangeably, there are a few subtle differences between the two acronyms. A DUI (driving under the influence) could include operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs. A DWI (driving while intoxicated), on the other hand, simply means driving while intoxicated or impaired. Getting charged with one or the other largely depends on the state the driver resides in. Regardless, both terms are used when a police officer judges a driver too impaired to drive safely.

Steps to Take After a DUI

Go to Class

The first action taken is usually enrolling in an educational program or course mandated by the judge in the driver’s case. These courses should cover both alcohol/drug treatment and general DUI concepts and learning. Most of these programs run for about 12 hours, but many can span several weeks. DUI education programs in particular usually last for about six weeks.

Apply For a New License

In some cases, the offender may have to apply for a new driver’s license due to their original being revoked. Applicants need to make sure their required DUI and alcohol-related courses are complete before re-testing for their license. It’s always a good idea to bring documentation of course completion. Also, the driver should ensure that they review the material on the driving test, just for a refresher.

Aftercare

Programs that focus on aftercare make sure the driver doesn’t become a repeat offender. Aftercare can last anywhere from 26 to 52 weeks, depending on the person’s needs and the severity of their DUI charge. The need for aftercare is evaluated following the other steps and is often strongly recommended for second and third-time offenders.
