Is Your College Student Abusing Drugs? - The Bergand Group

Sending your kids off to college can be a harrowing time. Many parents are left wondering how their kids will juggle college classes and socializing along with their new found freedom. Worries about their college student abusing drugs may arise, and there is reason for this concern. Between the pressure to fit in and stress of their new life, many college-aged students abuse drugs and alcohol. Is your college student abusing drugs? There are signs to look out for, and ways to intervene, so that their bad habits don’t turn into addictions.

Have a College Student Abusing Drugs?

If you have a college student abusing drugs, or are worried that they may start, there are some things you can do to help. First and foremost, having honest and open discussions about drugs and alcohol is your best preventative action. Letting your kids know how drugs and alcohol can affect their mind, body and wellbeing, will help prevent them from starting to use. If you have already taken this measure and are still worried, there are other measure you can take.

Friend them on social media. If you and your children have a good rapport, friend them on social media to stay in the loop about what they’re getting into in college. Many teenages post unfiltered statuses on social media and this can help you get an idea about parties they may be attending, things they’ve done on the weekends, etc.

  1. Meet their friends. If you have the chance to visit your child at college take advantage of it! Meeting their friends will help you gauge what groups they’re involved in. If you have a college student abusing drugs, chances are you’ll be able to see similar behaviors in the new friends they’ve made.
  2. Encourage new activities. Boredom is often the cause of a college student abusing drugs. Encouraging your child to take up new hobbies, or college activities, will ensure they fill their time up with healthy pursuits.
  3. Talk to them about their spending habits. This doesn’t mean that you have to have access to their online banking, but if you have a child who keeps “running out of money” that could be a red flag for drug or alcohol abuse. Talk to your child about budgeting their money and check in with them to see how it is going.

Having a college student abusing drugs can be a very stressful situation, especially if they are in a different state. While the tips above encourage you to be involved in your child’s life, make sure not to overstep your boundaries. You don’t want to pry into your child’s social life, but let them know that you care.
