It can be heartbreaking to have a family member or friend who is addicted to drugs. It can be even more disheartening knowing someone who is addicted and wants to get treatment, but can’t. For many people suffering from an addiction, getting the drug treatment in Baltimore they want is much harder than they realize.
An Eye-Opening Study
A study was done recently during which a couple of female researchers called doctors who can prescribe buprenorphine, a medication that helps people stop taking opioids. The researchers posed as Medicaid patients and as people who would pay cash. The doctors were each called twice, and the calls were placed a few weeks apart. There were more than 430 calls placed as ‘Medicaid patients’ and almost 420 calls placed as someone who would pay cash.
The results were astounding:
- Posing as Medicaid patients – 46% were denied appointments
- Posing as a cash patient – 38% were denied appointments
Why Is It so Hard for Some Patients to get Drug Treatment in Baltimore?
The results are sad. After all, shouldn’t someone who is sick be able to receive the treatment they need and be able to better themselves and become a productive member of society? There are three reasons why these patients may be turned away.
- Stigma – There is such a stigma when it comes to addicts. It’s an illness, like any other, but they are often treated differently than someone with cancer.
- Barriers from Medicaid – Sometimes Medicaid will put up barriers like requiring authorization before the medication can be prescribed.
- Cash Payments – Some of the doctors don’t want to take cash for payment
