Drinking and driving can have tragic consequences, hurting both the driver and others on the road. If you’ve been pulled over and cited for driving under the influence (DUI), you’re probably wondering about the next steps to take after a DUI.

You aren’t alone. We can help.

What Is a DUI?

A DUI is a citation for Driving Under the Influence (of alcohol). If you’re pulled over under suspicion of drinking and driving, you’ll be asked to take a breathalyzer test to determine the amount of alcohol in your system. The legal limit for driving is .08 Blood Alcohol Content (BAC). A breathalyzer result above that will get you a DUI citation, while one of .06-.079 will earn you a DWI ticket, or Driving While Intoxicated. This is a lesser offense.

What Do I Do After Getting a DUI?

You may end up in jail after a DUI, especially if this isn’t your first offense. Once you’ve been released, you’ll be assigned a court date. Many times, a DUI sentence can include having your driver license suspended until you’ve completed alcohol awareness courses that include helping you understand the signs of alcohol abuse and the dangers of drinking and driving.

You may also receive a fine, or issued community service. If you’ve received a DUI citation, it is important to have legal representation. Often, a talented attorney with experience helping clients like you can get a sentence reduced, reduce the fine amount, or reduce the number of points on your driver’s license.

DUI Aftercare and Education

DUI education is one of the most important steps to take after a DUI. Many people who are convicted of Driving Under the Influence are required to complete a 12-week educational session.

The Bergand Group offers sessions to fit your schedule, and may even refer you to an Intensive Outpatient Treatment program to help you fulfill your legal obligations and get the professional help you may need. For individuals who have had 2 or more DUI citations, an aftercare program that lasts from 26 to 52 weeks can help meet your individual needs.
