Drug Use, Misconceptions, and Consequences

Drug Use and Drug Addiction - The Bergand Group

Drug use – and the abuse that leads to addiction – is one of many ‘hot topics’ within our country at the moment. This is because so many people are suffering from these substances and more and their situations don’t seem to be improving with time. We all need to find better ways to help those who are already struggling with drug addiction and to prevent future cases from developing.

Marijuana Still Falls Under Concerning Drug Use

Marijuana is an example of drug use, the consequences of which many young people don’t realize. Because their brains are “still developing,” teens are “more sensitive to drugs’ adverse effects.” However, the number of myths and false information surrounding marijuana use prevents them from seeing these facts and can often encourage them to at least try it out. For example, “there is mounting evidence that regular marijuana use, especially during the teenage years, can result in long-lasting cognitive deficits and in persistent changes in brain structure and function.”

Adolescent drug use, when it comes to marijuana, is certainly overshadowed by the opioid epidemic and other drug addiction scenarios within the U.S. at present. However, that doesn’t mean it should go without discussion. Marijuana may not often lead to fatal overdose, but it is certainly causing problems for those who use it long-term, and it can act as a ‘gateway drug’ to other, more deadly substances. Lawmakers especially should consider this before legalizing this drug across the board.

Unfortunately, even after the action stops, the effects are shown to continue for some time. In young brains, the effects of this drug use may be permanent. Of course, the effects aren’t limited to adolescents: “the loss of motivation with marijuana is particularly devastating because it will affect a person’s ability to perform not just educationally but professionally.” Students have a  more difficult time focusing on schoolwork and those who work have a harder time with their work. This is a key indicator that the results of engaging with marijuana over time can affect people across the board, that this is not an  age-specific issue.

Perhaps the biggest problem is the circulation of the above-mentioned misconceptions and misinformation involved on the subject of drug addiction. People of varying generations believe that marijuana use is more harmless than not, or worse: they don’t consider the repercussions because the momentary social credit seems more pressing, and more valuable. Obviously the latter situation is a larger danger to high school and college students, but adults, too, can find themselves giving in to the influence of peers in these scenarios. It can seem more negative to turn down a friend than to think about the possible long-term risks of marijuana.

Another danger is looking to those who previously used this drug and who then were fine, or even successful. Of course these cases exist, as it isn’t a set in stone sentence across the board, but the risk always remains for others to suffer much more negative results. Not everyone will escape unscathed from using marijuana and other drugs that they perceive to be ‘safe.’ As another example, some will ‘vape’ because they think it’s a better alternative to the traditional smoking of marijuana, but this is another misleading ‘fact’ that is widely circulated… and untrue.
