Detox Programs Step One of Recovery

Detox Programs - The Bergand Group

Depending on your situation, the type of treatment that you enter into in an effort to break from an addiction will vary. Whether for an alcohol or drug abuse problem, you will likely need to experience detox programs, which are one of the early steps to breaking a substance abuse habit.

Treatment and Care Following Detox Programs

Modern addiction treatment is constantly evolving and changing in order to accommodate the diverse needs of the people who need help. “Most, however, start with detoxification and medically managed withdrawal, often considered the first stage of treatment.” Detox programs are often talked about, but not with a serious level of understanding. Detox is a crucial, early step of the recovery process, one that aids the individual in ridding his or her body of the addictive substance.

Another part of the purpose of detox programs is to “manage the acute and potentially dangerous physiological effects of stopping drug use.” It is imperative that the patient undertake this process in a professional environment, rather than alone and at home, because of the potential effect. Withdrawal is often much more intense that people realize (dangerous, even), so it should always be attempted with the aid of addiction or health experts.

Detox is certainly not the only step in the recovery process, and once it’s been completed, that person still has much work to do. Following this experience, the patient has to work within other forms of treatment for addiction in order to “address the psychological, social, and behavioral problems associated with addiction.” This might mean therapy, medication, further assessment, and/or other types of programs that are meant to help the person to really change their behavior for the long-term.

Detox programs are often referred to as “medically managed withdrawal” for the reasons above. Since withdrawal is all but guaranteed, and the most sensible location for appropriate medications is within a professional health setting, detox should really not be attempted anywhere else. The dangers are far too great for this risk, so at least speak with a counselor about any and all concerns that you may have before making a decision.

If the situation is more serious than some others, then a longer-term stay may be necessary. These residential experiences involve 24/7 care for the patient, ensuring that he or she is not going through the process alone and unaided. The settings of these residences are often not hospitals, appearing and functioning more as communities in order to make the people staying there feel more comfortable. If they begin to see themselves as functional, healthy members of society, then the transition out into “real” communities will be all the easier. This makes sense especially considering that “addiction is viewed in the context of an individual’s social and psychological deficits, and treatment focuses on developing personal accountability and responsibility as well as socially productive lives.”

Even if the person doesn’t need to stay for the long-term, shorter stays may be necessary during or after detox programs. This treatment, too, involves checkups, therapy, and group work, depending on the  needs of the patient. The point is, really, that programs for everyone exist within the world of addiction treatment in order to best approach our nation’s ongoing issue.
