Detox Program Step One of Many

Detox Program - The Bergand Group

There are a multitude of things that someone trying to reshape his or her life following drug use needs to think about. One is whether or not their addiction calls for a detox program and what, exactly, detoxification can do for them.

What to Expect from a Detox Program

Detoxification in a general sense means the physical separation of the body from dangerous and addictive substances. Once a person ceases drinking or taking drugs, the body often goes through a period of withdrawal (with varying intensity), so it’s crucial to undertake a detox program in a supervised and perhaps clinical setting. Withdrawal is nothing to make light of and the more support a person has throughout the entire addiction recovery experience, the better.

Depending on the place in which you opt for detox, the experience may include different kinds of programs. Some are coupled with therapy and/or classes to better supplement the rehabilitation. Not everyone has the time or can shoulder the cost of certain programs, though, so many opt for a shorter stay. Depending on the severity of the patient’s symptoms, they may be unable to fully break from their addiction with just a few short weeks of rehab.

The most important factor within any detox program is that it is “medically supervised.” Without doctors, nurses, addiction specialists, and/or counselors nearby to offer their expertise and support, the person may be in danger of succumbing to powerful withdrawal symptoms. Someone who is a student, who has a family, or who has a busy job may both need help in their recovery while being able to return to the healthy aspects of his or her life, the pieces that give it structure.

This is where inpatient and outpatient programs come in. We’ve discussed their differences previously, but the simple difference is that outpatient allows the patient to go to and from the treatment center in order to continue, for example, going to work during the day. Inpatient, then, requires the patient to stay on site for a more lengthy period of time during which they are looked after. Each comes with pros and cons and no single detox program is right for everyone; it takes a consultation to determine which better suits your own life.

Detox itself also varies in its length of time depending on which substance had been abused. Certain drugs take a longer period of time to be released from the body and each of them has varying withdrawal symptoms that must be dealt with. Some allow for other prescription drugs to take the place of the addictive substance, and though you would need to then detox from that drug, it’s usually a smoother process than the original substance alone.

Perhaps the most important piece of the detox program experience is what happens after. Detoxification is only one step toward recovery, and though it’s a necessary one, it isn’t the end by far. There are a lot of different kinds of support group and therapy options, for example, that can allow the patient to work with and alongside others to a firmer recovery. Individual/one-on-one therapy is also available for those who would prefer a more private route. In either case, additional action must be taken to reach the most solid results.
