Counseling and Psychotherapy Provide Guidance

Counseling and Psychotherapy - The Bergand Group

There is a multitude of options for people who are working to recover from an addiction to drugs or alcohol. Of course, not every option will work for every person, which is why the process of selecting an effective one is crucial and should be carried out both quickly and thoroughly, however difficult it sounds. Counseling and psychotherapy are some of the choices available that can ease the transition to sobriety.

Recovering With Counseling and Psychotherapy

Though they are sometimes spoken of in the same breath, counseling and psychotherapy are not the same. Counseling is usually performed within a shorter time frame while psychotherapy is carried out over a longer period. The former is typically used to discuss and solve fairly specific issues while the latter tackles more broad problems and overarching themes. Despite these differences, though, the two are frequently used interchangeably.

These “treatments are often mixed and matched to fit the individual, as resources (money and/or health insurance) permit.” Since the needs of the patient will vary from one to another, it’s important to find or tailor a treatment strategy to him or her; “each offers a different level and type of support to persons recovering from drug or alcohol dependence.” Professionals will know, after a consultation, what is needed for the person, but the patient (and/or their loved ones) has to take the steps to speak with an addiction counselor.

Counseling and psychotherapy both offer safe and supportive places for the individual to discuss the individual’s struggles. Whether those issues are with an addiction or some form of mental illness, those counselors and/or specialists are trained to tackle the problem alongside the patient. Some of the many areas that can be explored within these treatments are interpersonal relationships, self-worth, coping skills, and much more. Opportunities to speak candidly and to be open with one’s emotions are few and far between these days, which only increases the value of these sessions.

The benefits offered by both avenues include the ability of the patient to open up about particular subjects and issues. Following these experiences, he or she is likely to be able to more easily communicate with others about these topics in the future. Part of the goal of both counseling and psychotherapy is for the person to be able to function independently of the therapy sessions: this is possible once they learn to apply those strategies into his or her own life.

Even within these broad categories, the patient has the ability to choose more specific types of psychotherapy, depending on his or her needs and desires for recovery and healing. Depending on that focus, the counseling session will center around anything from “practical ways to cope with specific problems such as” mental illness to carefully exploring past trauma. Whatever the individual’s needs, counselors are able to formulate plans to address them with sensitivity.

Explore all of your options, including counseling and psychotherapy, before coming to any conclusions about your mental health or addiction recovery. Speak with your family and friends and other people that you trust: then you can meet with a specialist who will help you to navigate these many programs. If you are trying to decide what kind of program will help you the most, then contact The Bergand Group, particularly if you or someone you care about is suffering from an addiction.
