Writing and Recovery

Writing and Recovery - The Bergand Group

Writing and recovery have been paired together for some time, as writing is a great way to release your negative emotions. Whether you choose writing as a vehicle for outward expression, or use it as a personal therapeutic tool, writing has countless benefits for healing.

Writing is a form of expression, and some people find this method of expressing themselves easier than talking about how they feel. When you pair writing with recovery, you open up new doors for recovering addicts. Knowing that the writing can be kept to themselves, people are more likely to put their thoughts on paper. As way to broach new or sensitive subjects, writing and recovery can be a great to share what you have been feeling with either your individual therapist or your group therapy members. Due to the ability to organize your thoughts on paper, writing often eases the stress of having to discuss subjects such as addiction and mental health struggles.

Writing and recovery often play a part in making goals become a reality. “For instance, one form of expressive writing might be thinking about and writing out your goals in life—an activity that research has shown is beneficial for motivation.” During drug and alcohol recovery, many times people have a hard time seeing past the current moment. The stress surrounding staying sober and avoiding relapse can be lessened with some simple writing techniques.

Writing and Recovery – A Tool For Expression

So, how can you use writing during recovery as a way to express feelings that might be uncomfortable to speak about?

  • Create a gratitude journal. Every morning or evening write a few things that you are grateful for.
  • Document your journey through recovery. Write about the good and the bad, use this expression as a tool to see where you’ve been and to plan where you want to be.
  • Write a letter to your past self, future self, family member that you’ve wronged, or anyone else that you want to say things to. You don’t have to send the letter, sometimes getting your feelings onto paper is all you need.
  • Write a plan for yourself. Whether that means you create a daily, weekly, monthly or even yearly plan, write about where you want to be after a certain amount of time. This can help you keep track of your goals.
  • Write about why you are angry, whether with yourself or someone else. Again, you don’t have to share what you write if you don’t want to. Getting your anger out through writing is a healthy form of expression.
  • Write notes for your next therapy session. Sometimes it’s hard to organize your thoughts during a therapy session, creating an outline touching upon what you want to discuss will help make your session flow.

While writing and recovery pair well together, it should not be used in place of seeing an addiction and mental health specialist. Finding a recovery center that specializes in addiction treatment is crucial to your sobriety.
