Teen Relapse Prevention Can Be Perilous

Teen Relapse Prevention - The Bergand Group

There is a lot of debate regarding what does and doesn’t work in treating substance abuse and, more specifically, in teen relapse prevention.  Though each expert seems to have his or her own theories and practices, there are some that objectively work better for helping these young people than others.  Though a relapse can’t always be avoided, there are certain strategies that can be implemented by family, friends, and/or professionals in order to provide the safest and most effective recovery period for adolescents in this turbulent time.

The Dos and Don’ts of Teen Relapse Prevention

Reportedly, “rates… are notoriously high, falling between 40 and 60 percent… [fusion_builder_container hundred_percent=”yes” overflow=”visible”][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”no” center_content=”no” min_height=”none”][and] is even higher among young adults,” and thus those who struggle with rehab haven’t been getting the attention and care that they need to move into true recovery.  Particularly when it comes to teen relapse prevention, employing the right tactics can make or break their experience and make things infinitely more difficult.  For example, when parents are “harshly confrontational” with troubled adolescents, it can have negative consequences for their self-esteem and lead to a higher rate of relapse.  Instead, offering support and working together for positive change using gentle encouragement can give them a leg to stand on, so to speak, that they may not have had otherwise.

Something to consider is that many teenagers who have issues of substance abuse are suffering from additional circumstances, such as mental disorders, which greatly complicated the situation.  This is why it’s more effective for the individual to seek out treatment that can cover both, offering stability in a highly turbulent time while expertly shaping a healthier lifestyle.  Teen relapse prevention can be thwarted by the presence of a debilitating mental disorder, so it’s best to work within a professional environment to assure that neither addiction nor mental health stand between the individual and recovery.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to keeping a person from relapsing.  Too often, people believe that if a strategy has been used to good effect with one person in the past, it will do the same for someone else who is struggling.  This is rarely the case, since each person is different and has been shaped by various environments and experiences.  As such, addiction treatment should be personalized to attend to the needs of the individual.  “Many young adults, especially those with multiple relapses behind them, need a different approach – one that includes not only education but also an experiential, interactive process for improving their functioning in key interpersonal domains.”

Teen relapse prevention sometimes relies too heavily upon the notion that these young people will recognize that they need help and then ask for it, which can make the job of their guardians more difficult.  If addiction is labeled, as it often is, as an illness, or a physical disease only, then many people will shy away from getting help, or could even receive the wrong type of care because of this stigma.  They may come to believe that they need to be “cured,” as if they are beyond being able to help themselves without medication or other more physical “solutions.”  In truth, wellness can come from mindfulness, opening up in individual or group therapy, or a number of other options that are more about changing from within than bring in an “answer” from the outside.

Recovering from a period of addiction, however long or short, is never easy.  People may stumble along the way and find themselves in similar, dangerous situations to before they began.  Particularly when it comes to teen relapse prevention, there are a lot of ways that the patient or their support group can struggle… or succeed.  Entering in a highly-trained facility maybe help the adolescent to develop the tools he or she needs to really improve things one day at a time.  For more information about teen relapse prevention, get in touch with The Bergand Group.
