Many times when people enter addiction treatment they are primarily aware of the physical side effects of using drugs and alcohol. What many people don’t consider is how to heal the mind during this rough time. Aside from the plan set in place by your addiction treatment physician, there are things you can do to heal the mind during addiction treatment.
When someone is suffering from an addiction they are affecting every part of their body with alcohol or drugs. This means they are causing physical harm as well as mental harm. So often do people enter treatment for an addictive disorder and end up treating their mental health as well. In order to heal the mind during addiction a patient should treat co-occuring disorders.
How Can You Heal the Mind During Addiction Treatment?
A great way to address mental health issues that co-occur with addiction is to seek counseling from your addiction treatment center. Opening up about your addiction allows you to see your troubles head-on in a safe and secure environment. Many times people have a hard time talking about their addiction, and this is largely due to the stigma that is placed on addictive disorders. When people find the courage to discuss their struggle with a trusted therapist, friend or family member, they find relief and can start to heal.
Another way to help heal the mind during addiction is to exercise. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to take up running, this can be as simple as going for a walk every evening. A recent NY Times article wrote:
“A walk in the park may soothe the mind and, in the process, change the workings of our brains in ways that improve our mental health, according to an interesting new study of the physical effects on the brain of visiting nature. Most of us today live in cities and spend far less time outside in green, natural spaces than people did several generations ago. City dwellers also have a higher risk for anxiety, depression and other mental illnesses than people living outside urban centers, studies show.”
Nature can help uplift the mind, and taking walks, going for bike rides, or simply sitting outside and practicing light meditation can help your body heal after an addiction.
When you take time to heal the mind during addiction you are strengthening its connection to your physical body. The combination of addiction treatment prescribed to you by your addiction treatment center and your efforts at healing the mind will be beneficial on your road to recovery.
