Breaking the Stigma of Mental Illness

How Can You Celebrate National Recovery Month? - The Bergand Group

Breaking the stigma of mental illness has become a trend that we’re seeing everywhere. From celebrities to major news outlets, breaking the stigma of mental illness is widely discussed. The thought behind the movement is that if we remove the stigma associated with mental illness, we can pave the way for people who are suffering to get help.

Many people are willing to discuss physical illnesses, but when it comes to mental illnesses they are reluctant to get help. This sets the stage for stigmas – people don’t want to be seen as weak so they don’t get help. Many people associate mental illness with negative things such as homelessness, broken homes, “craziness,” and the like. Breaking the stigma of mental illness would allow for people who are suffering to get the help they need without worrying that they will be pinned as that “type” of person. In all reality, mental illness affects our friends, our teachers, and our neighbors. Breaking the stigma of mental illness will unite our communities.

Not understanding what was going on, Yvana was confused, tired, and hopeless. After getting help Yvana began to understand her mental illness. In efforts to spread the word about the importance of breaking the stigma of mental illness, Yvana made this video.
