Perhaps one of the biggest obstacles in the road to recovery for those struggling with substance abuse is the stigma born from the addiction myth. Family and friends should be pillars of support within this process, but too often they are, whether intentional or not, impeding their loved one’s progress with some of the things they say and do.
The Harm of the Modern Addiction Myth
Recovery is a tenuous process in itself without the added complication of having those around you express their judgment. Too many people are harmfully critical of someone who is struggling with an addiction, and too often those same people have very little real understanding of what that experience is like. The many myths and falsehoods that surround addiction are accepted as truth and the patient is left to face the weight of those accusations and misguided beliefs.
Addiction myth “fuels shame which feeds on secrets, silence, and judgment.” It’s true that the experience is unlikely to be a wholly positive one, given the nature of addiction and its difficult recovery in general, but rumors and condemnation make it infinitely more difficult. “Addiction is not a one person affair,” which is why clearing up these dire misunderstandings is a crucial part of the journey toward recovery for someone who is suffering.
The patient will have the help of professionals and counselors, if they’ve already opted for treatment, but even that can be stymied if the person’s family, friends, coworkers, and others still exhibit an addiction stigma. This negativity is toxic to the people who are trying to find sobriety, to make healthier lives for themselves. “Many still believe that addiction is a character flaw or weakness even when they are faced with scientific evidence that addiction is a treatable disease with millions in long-term recovery.” It’s hard to imagine how these beliefs are so widespread in a time when so many people in the U.S. are currently suffering, but perhaps those who perpetuate the stigma are simply afraid that they could be vulnerable to developing an addiction themselves. Whatever the reason, though, there is no reason that these misconceptions should be held or circulated, and instead everyone should put that energy into supporting those who need it most.
Unfortunately, addiction stigma has a big impact on those patients. They may not admit that they have a problem and won’t seek out professional treatment out of fear for how others might see them. The fear of judgment, gossip, and isolation is often stronger than a desire to break off from using a certain substance. Because they aren’t receiving the proper care, then, they can be at risk for worsening their addiction or suffering from an overdose.
In a similar way, someone might not admit that their loved one has a drinking or drug problem because of the perceived shame of the situation. They worry that, if the truth gets out, then their family or group “would be judged as seriously flawed,” including themselves in that judgment. If you refuse to face the truth, however unpleasant, then things will only get worse. It certainly isn’t easy to admit that you have a problem, or to accept those who are struggling with issues of substance abuse, but an addiction myth will only do more and more damage over time.
