A Movement to Break the Stigma About Mental Health Issues

A Movement to Break the Stigma About Mental Health Issues - The Bergad Group

In an effort to break the stigma about mental health issues, “Depressed Cake Shops” are popping up all around the globe. While cake is normally the central snack among happy occasions (birthdays, weddings, etc.), pop-up shops in places from Australia to Malaysia to the United States have begun to shed light on the darker moments that usually go unspoken.

This movement to break the stigma about mental health issues has been so successful, and has been a great way to raise money and awareness for mental health issues around the globe. “Essentially a pro and semi-pro pop-up bake sale, the Depressed Cake Shop idea started in the U.K. a few years back. Emma Thomas, a creative director and public relations specialist, held the original fundraiser, selling cakes that were gray, with at most just one pop of color to symbolize hope.”

Being such a great conversation starter, many people are becoming more and more aware that depression and other mental health issues affect so many of us. This movement to break the stigma about mental health issues can really bring us together and relieve those who are suffering from the shame that can be associated with their illness.

One in four people will suffer from mental health issues at some point in their life. “Depressed Cake Shops,” and other movements to break the stigma about mental health issues, give people the relief that they are not alone. Often this relief is enough for them to seek treatment.
