Anxiety and Addiction: Co-Existing Disorders

Anxiety and Addiction - The Bergand Group

It’s well known that co-existing disorders can play a huge role in habits of substance abuse. In this case, anxiety and addiction are often seen together, as the latter can lead to the development of the former. Can we, then, address anxiety thoroughly enough to prevent addiction down the road?

Ease the Strain of Both Anxiety and Addiction

It’s not difficult to see why so many people abuse drugs and alcohol if they are suffering from anxiety. Anxiety can cause intense worry, distress, panic, and more “unpleasant” emotions. Some will try to lessen the intensity of these feelings by dulling them with substances, but this obviously is not a viable solution, or a solution of any kind.

Self-medicating in this way can seem appealing because it seems to work right away, to have an instant numbing effect. When compared with the “hard work” of exercise, therapy, or meditation (as a few examples), a lot of people will opt for the faster “remedy.” Unfortunately, they often find that this is only a short-term relief: “relying on substances to cope with anxiety does not resolve the underlying problem and the ongoing reliance on a substance essentially assures that it will eventually become less effective at solving it.”

You can probably guess how quickly things go downhill from there. If that substance becomes less and less able to dull the anxiety, then the person has to consume more and more of it. This leads to full-blown addictions, withdrawal, cravings, and everything else in the substance abuse arena. Rather than taking a leap and addressing the actual source of the anxiety, increased consumption blossoms into dependence and, ironically, often more anxiety than ever before.

Luckily, there is an abundance of resources that are available in order to help individuals to address the root causes of anxiety and to combat the addiction that may develop as a result.  To learn more about how anxiety and addiction are linked, contact The Bergand Group.
