If you’ve been issued a DUI or DWI, you will have to enroll in DUI/DWI programs and/or addiction treatment courses, depending on your evaluation results. You will have to meet with a counselor for testing to identify the best course of action for your individual needs as you may have an alcohol or drug problem. You will learn how to make more responsible choices and understand alcohol impairment levels, among other things.
What is the Difference Between A DUI and A DWI?
They can be considered the same thing, but each state is different. A DUI and a DWI both mean that the driver has alcohol or drugs in their system. In Maryland, a person with a BAC .08 or above will be charged with a DUI. A person with a BAC of .07 will be charged with a DWI. Even if your BAC is below .05, you can still be charged due to impaired driving.
Is one more serious than the other?
Neither is “worse,” because exhibiting dangerous behavior while driving puts yourself and those around you at risk, but in some states such as Maryland, DUI is considered a more serious charge.
How can getting a DUI or DWI impact your license, including your insurance premiums?
A driver who is charged with a DWI will get 8 points, making them eligible for license suspension, and a driver charged of a DUI will get 12 points, making them eligible for license revocation. These points will stay on the license for two years.
Every insurance company handles a DUI differently, but most times rates will increase by about $5,000 per year. Altogether, a DUI may cost the driver $10,000. The DUI/DWI will be removed from your driving record in about three to seven years.
