Anger is a visceral emotion, and left unchecked it can result in aggression and violence, and cause harm both to the person projecting the anger and those around him or her. Over time, unchecked anger can result in significant mental and physical harm. In the British Mental Health Organisation’s Boiling Point Report in 2008, 28% of people said they sometimes worry about how angry they feel, and 12% said they have trouble controlling their anger.
If you feel you have trouble controlling your anger, or worry about the consequences your anger may be having on your and those around you, there is help available. Anger management is the process of learning how to deal with anger in a constructive, not destructive, way. There are a number of techniques used to achieve this goal.
Anger Management Techniques
Being aware of your anger is the first tool you have in taking control over it. Relaxation is an anger management technique one can use when he or she becomes conscious that their anger is getting out of control. Relaxation techniques include deep breathing, phrase repetition, visualization of relaxing imagery, and more.
The anger management technique of cognitive restructuring focuses on changing the way you think to change the way you react to a situation. It involves a strong awareness of the fact that anger will not solve the situation which caused it, and encourages those who suffer from anger to react to it constructively.
Often, lack of or poor communication can make anger worse. Developing communication skills can be the key for some who suffer from anger to learn how talking it out can help diffuse tension.
Another potential trigger for anger is your environment. In this case, changing your environment can be instrumental in dealing with anger.
