What Role Does Nutrition Play in Addiction Recovery?

How Can an Addict Stay Healthy During Recovery? - The Bergand Group

When facing addiction recovery, there are many factors to take into consideration. Between opening up about your addiction to loved ones and finding an addiction recovery program that works for you, it’s easy to let things like nutrition slide. While your mental health and recovery are your number one concern, good nutrition can help this process along. Nutrition can play a big role in addiction recovery.

Your Gut Can Affect Your Feelings, Research Suggests.

When you are involved in addiction recovery there are a lot of different sources to consult, each with their own suggestion about what works well for combating the feelings that go along with healing from an addiction.  This year, two U.S. departments (Health and Human Services, Agriculture) began exploring how a diet change could greatly and positively impact the addiction recovery experience. If nutrition can prove to be a real answer toward improving the addiction recovery process, it will mean great strides in the road to healing holistically.

The “modern diet,” often falls short in terms of what it offers.  It really isn’t balanced at all and, as a result, can impact mood, sleep habits, and your addiction recovery more than most people would ever consider.  “Many studies have linked depression with low levels of key B vitamins, for instance, while low maternal Vitamin D levels have been found to play a role in the child’s risk of developing schizophrenia.”  If the meals eaten every day, multiple times per day, do not contain vitamins and minerals that help to regulate chemical levels in the brain, it’s no wonder that introducing a diet change would have positive effects.

It may not be surprising; after all, professionals have known for a while that certain nutrients can better or worsen the addiction recovery process depending on whether or not they are present.  It’s more the idea of “dietary patterns” that is emerging now, the concept of a larger-scale meal structure that, as part of a routine, can form a solid foundation of recovery and improvement when living with issues of mental health.  Further, it’s been suggested that mental and digestive health are linked, which provides even more encouraging a reason to watch what you eat.  Many American diets, centered around processed foods, fat, and calories, are not only bad for your mind, but for your gut.  Taking care of the latter is more historically thought of as relating to “physical” wellness, but now it’s believed that “gut bacteria imbalances” can play a role in the development and worsening of various neurological conditions.

Along with treatment such as Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) and Outpatient Detox/Withdraw Symptom Management, good nutrition can play a role in addiction recovery.  Don’t forgo counseling and medication for an apple a day, but consider looking into a diet change in order to further improve your results.  For more information on addiction recovery services, get in touch with The Bergand Group.
