Substance Abuse Steps for New President

Substance Abuse and Sobriety in 2017 - The Bergand Group

With this new year comes a new president for our United States. In order to make a difference in easing the effects of substance abuse as they rage against the country, President Trump should seriously consider some of the following. Without the aid of our government and lawmakers, change toward more complete sobriety will be much more difficult.

Our Nation Needs Substance Abuse Solutions

The levels of addiction and of substance abuse have risen far past being ‘out of control.’ This epidemic affects nearly all people within America in one way or another. “Last November, the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) released its first ever Surgeon General’s Report focused specifically on drug misuse and abuse in the United States.” We have to hope that the new administration will take the state of addiction seriously and will act in accordance with those dire concerns.

There have been more studies than ever into the effects that drugs and alcohol have on the brain, both short and long-term. These substances affect the brain’s neurotransmitters and increase dangerous cravings. In short, they change the function of the brain so that the individual’s thoughts and desires are centered securely around the ‘reward’ that comes with these substances. In order to work around these changes, we need to be able to understand them more completely. To this end, there must be more research into “practical neurobiology.”

Part of this development means that we as a population need to change the way that we both think and talk about substance abuse. The stigma that is so often assigned to those struggling with addictions is hugely detrimental to their recovery. We need to be able to “move away from addiction treatment models that use shame to discourage people” and to instead focus on research and sobriety solutions. This effort has to be made by everyone whether they are in a position of power or not.

Part of the above is to encourage education within this subject. Young people need to learn about the (sometimes deadly) consequences of using drugs, while older people need to realize that those suffering from an addiction are not to be scorned and alienated. Our president needs to “thoughtfully use the power of addiction prevention public policies and programs to reduce the stigma surrounding addiction to replace it with knowledge, understanding and compassion, so that those who need treatment can and will seek it.” At least, this is the hope that we have for the next four years.

Of course, part of helping these individuals to reach sobriety is to be able to offer them suitable medical care. There is more to addiction treatment than a stay in a clinic, and often medication and other physiological steps are necessary to help them to safely make it through the experience of relapse and withdrawal. Since it’s difficult for many to receive this kind of help these days, this should be one of the primary focuses of our new president and the supporting government… as soon as possible.
