Addiction Treatment That Really Makes a Difference

Addiction Treatment - The Bergand Group

Working within the best possible method of addiction treatment is absolutely crucial to recovery. Part of your recovery plan may involve some level of therapy, in which case you want to make sure that you have found a person and therapy style that fits the best for your situation.

Signs That You Should Switch Addiction Treatment Locations

Some experts insist that “psychotherapy, when performed with knowledge of how addiction works psychologically, is optimal treatment for most people with addictions.” Not everyone will agree, as there are a dozen ways to combat addiction and since not all of them work for each person. However, Psychotherapy is certainly one form of addiction treatment, and it can be highly successful… if you are in the right circumstances.

While attending these sessions, some of the following are important considerations to determine if the therapy sessions are ideal for the patient:

  • Is the therapy focused entirely on what the consequences and risks are? It shouldn’t be. The professional should clearly outline the issues associated with alcohol or drug abuse. Part of moving forward is being realistic about where the path might lead if the patient were to continue along their current route. However, the patient is likely already aware of what might happen to them, and has possibly already seen it happen to a loved one. “The goal of treatment is to help understand the cause of addictive behavior, not its consequences,” so therapy should tailor to that.
  • You don’t want your experience within therapy to be absorbed in the tiniest details (for example, which is your drink of choice, or how you obtained illegal substances). This shouldn’t feel like an investigation or an interrogation. The goal is to work with you to understand the root causes, to partner with a professional who can help you to identify some of the underlying causes of the addiction’s development.
  • The person conducting the therapy should absolutely invite you to explore why you may have delved into drug or alcohol use in the first place. What was that original reason that you said ‘yes?’ This is critical in order to identify triggers and cravings so that you can better avoid them in the future. Understanding an addiction is the foundation of recovering from it.
  • Is the therapist focusing on you as an individual person, or are they trying to apply broad, sweeping concepts and generalizations to your situation? He or she should be working with you as a unique story, as someone with his or her own conditions, thoughts, feelings, fears, etc. There may be some basis on which to base their deductions, but that should be the first stepping stone, and not the entire bridge. “If you are coming to understand how your addiction fits with who you are an individual, versus seeing it as a thing in itself, you’re on the right path.”

Essentially, addiction treatment – and whatever therapy it involves – should focus on understanding the role that addiction has played in your life as an individual. Sweeping concepts may inform, but should not direct. The professional should be attentive and thorough, listening and questioning and involving you in the process in order to get your feedback and report of experience.
