Depending on the addiction that a person is suffering from, he or she will need one or more of many different types of treatment. The addiction treatment programs of today are more specialized than ever so that they can offer the most help possible to those who need it.
Detoxification and Other Addiction Treatment Programs
Whatever the patient is recovering from, the first step usually involves some amount of detoxification in a monitored, clinical setting. Participating within this environment ensures a safe experience, since detox can often be a roller coaster of emotions, sensations, and symptoms. Many suffer from withdrawal, which can be dangerous and even deadly if not undertaken properly. Since many people lack a thorough understanding of addiction and its risks, this is a real possibility if the effort is attempted on one’s own.
“Detoxification, the process by which the body clears itself of drugs, is designed to manage the acute and potentially dangerous physiological effects of stopping drug use.” This process remedies the (initial) physical effects of addiction and doesn’t do much for the other aspects, such as social recovery, once the experience is finished. If there is any level of counseling included in the process, then some work may be done to aid in the emotional and mental efforts, but it isn’t guaranteed. Either way, there is a lot of work to be done after the detoxification, which is where other addiction treatment programs come into play.
Part of detox may be the addition of medication into the patient’s recovery. Some may be wary of taking “more drugs” when they are trying to withdraw from an addiction, but this is a completely different situation with a different goal. “Medically managed withdrawal” is just what it sounds like: aiding the person through a tumultuous time by providing them with medication that can stabilize his or her experience. Of course, those who allot this medication know what they’re doing and are equipped to make the decision, giving the individual the best chance to recover.
Addiction treatment programs following detoxification may include short or long-term stays in qualified facilities. Inpatient therapy requires the individual to stay within the facility as a live-in patient where he or she will have a much more structured lifestyle during this time when they may need it the most. They also have easier access to doctors and counselors, so if there is any emergency, they are already on site to get anything from advice to more serious help for whatever might have come up.
Outpatient therapy, then, is when the patient travels to and from the treatment center. They go during the day, for example, for check-ups and support groups, but when the day is over, they return to their homes. This may work better for those with less severe addictions and for those who can’t afford to take time from work or school to stay for months at a time in a facility. However, it isn’t for everyone, since those with more dire symptoms should really be within the recovery environment 24/7.
