There have been scores of proposed methods of treating the victims of substance abuse, and depending on the person, those attempts vary in their successes. “Not all brains are created equal,” which is why a new addiction treatment plan has begun to gain popularity for its individualized look at a person’s situation.
Putting Together a Modern Addiction Treatment Plan
The “modern” method is called neuroimaging, and it, in a nutshell, is patients undergoing “certain mental tasks or look at or listen to a particular stimuli” while their mental states are measured. It’s fairly simple in concept, but what can neuroimaging really do to help those who are suffering from an addiction, prolonged or otherwise?
Well, the alleged goal of these researchers is to use this technology to “pin down the various ways different people’s brains are stimulated by drugs—and ultimately changed by their regular use—” in order to develop a better addiction treatment plan for that individual. In a more concrete example, this neuroimaging might help experts to observe different people’s brains and note any differences that might make them more or less receptive to certain kinds of treatment. That way, less time will be wasted with trial and error and the patient can receive the help that they need more quickly.
The kinds of differences that these researchers would be looking for are conditions like whether one person is more or less likely to relapse than another. What they might observe via neuroimaging are instances of, for example, “heightened activity in areas of the brain that respond to drug-triggered pleasure,” which would obviously make avoiding cravings or triggers more difficult for them than for others. In addition, that person would likely receive less pleasure from other things, again making it harder to break an addiction because they find little joy in other things.
Essentially, this concept could mean big, positive changes for a patient’s addiction treatment plan. When we are able to better predict a person’s behavior and tenancies based on their brain chemistry, professionals will be able to help them adjust in a much more personalized (and effective) way. It will better inform those professionals as to what may prove difficult within the individual’s recovery and what kind of treatment options will be more beneficial. Looking into the “structural differences among brains,” researchers could isolate structures that lend themselves toward positive change and identify those that make it more difficult for a person to reach sobriety.
This technology isn’t in play quite yet, but the concept is very encouraging. The world of drug and alcohol addiction is a fairly bleak one at present, so good news can be hard to find. In order to really develop methods that can help addicts to heal, we will have to work together as a community to create these possible technologies, even if their functionality isn’t assured. “With the benefit of accumulated research we may be able to customize treatments to meet the needs of individual patients,” and that will really be the beginning of a gradual rise in success.
