For a person who is in the throes of an addiction, it can seem impossible to find care. Addiction treatment centers are a dime a dozen, seemingly, but with only a few acting as legitimate centers for a healthy recovery. How are victims supposed to be able to get better if there is no clear path for them to follow?
Navigating the Many Addiction Treatment Centers
“More people are dying of drug overdose than any other non-natural cause—more than from guns, suicide, and car accidents.” There’s no question, then, of the urgency of this dire situation. Some people take action, others say they will and then don’t, and others still do nothing entirely. There isn’t a united front, there isn’t a single solution, and, in the meantime, there is a lot of devastation and loss of life.
Everyone from regular people to celebrities is able to suffer from an overdose, and they do. Though we mostly hear stories of the latter, there are countless ‘normal’ people who become addicted to opioids and heroin and who are hurt or killed as a result of use. The numbers are rising and, despite a lot of talk from government leaders, and despite warnings from health professionals, this is still happening, even after years of knowing about it.
Why has nothing changed? There are a lot of reasons, but the bottom line is that options for addiction treatment centers are sprawling, with many of them actually being subpar. This epidemic has ‘inspired’ some to take up unethical business practices, advertising themselves as specialists on the web without the proper training… or anything else. As a result, Google has cracked down on addiction-related searches, making it even more difficult for patients to connect with genuine experts. “Only about 10 percent of people who need treatment for drug-use disorders get any whatsoever,” and this is unacceptable.
There is some hope, though. Those programs and centers that are qualified for this job are doing everything that they can to aid those who have come through their doors. Where subpar locations have a ‘one size fits all’ approach, the better facilities offered programs that are varied and that help to accommodate their patients’ specific needs. They offer different kinds of counseling depending on what is best for the individual, and not what is most convenient or cheap for them. Put simply, good addiction treatment centers focus on the patient above all else, and profit has nothing to do with it.
It’s a sad and serious matter, that the opioid crisis hasn’t lifted yet. Still, it won’t change with well wishes and positive thinking. We all have to work together to make our voices heard by those with the power to change laws and health regulations. Currently, most patients aren’t made aware of existing “treatments because of a fatal chasm between addiction science and practitioners and programs,” so maybe what needs to change first is the spread of knowledge surrounding this situation and its many issue.
