Addiction Myths Damage Individual Will

Addiction Myths - The Bergand Group

One of the biggest issues involved with the conversation about substance abuse is the prevalence of addiction myths and misinformation. If a person who is struggling with substance abuse believes any or all of what circulates, then it will be all the more difficult for him or her to recover.

The Dangerous Power of Addiction Myths

For a person who is already working through an addiction, language matters. What they hear from others and what they tell themselves matters. As a result, if there are fallacies that are being circulated and of which the person is made aware, then those fallacies could become their ‘truth.’

If, for example, they believe that they have no power to turn things around and to find recovery, then they may start to believe it. As a result, the person may never take steps to overcome his or her addiction. The reality here is that recovery is certainly within their reach, and needing a bit of help along the way doesn’t diminish that. Unfortunately, if they are told that it’s impossible, they may not resist cravings and urges as much as they would if they believed that they could overcome the addiction. Similarly, this way of thinking “becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.” Because they are told that they have no power to end the cycle of substance abuse, the individual doesn’t try to take steps to end the addiction, and it continues, or even grows in strength.

Another of the addiction myths is that people give up, or continue their addictive habits more often than they are able to overcome them. Again, this is a dangerous train of thought, since it leads some to believe that “most people” aren’t able to recover and find sobriety, and if “most people” can’t do it, then why would they be able to? The reality is that so many people are able to find that support and aid and get better that we should be highlighting these victories rather than not. There is hope to be found in the successes of other people, but thinking that the majority of those with addictions aren’t able to reach this point installs a hopelessness rather than the opposite.

That isn’t to say that the road to sobriety is an easy one, or that it’s “simple.” There are complications and pitfalls, but it’s far from impossible. There are people around you who are willing and able to help, from family and friends to coworkers and professionals. It’s true that it isn’t “simple” to overcome an addiction, but it’s a path that can be walked more easily with the support of others.
